Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

We all teach our kids about reducing, reusing and recycling at home. Some teachers even do it at school and some schools are awesome enough to have separate bins in the lunch areas. But what about in the classroom?

Kids will do more of what you do and less of what you say...so how about being the example. We all know to reuse the scrap paper - so expected - but we could do so much more.

Here are a few new ideas:

* Buy a shredder to shred those confidential documents that you are done with. Use it for art and craft activities. Donate it to the prep class or use it for garden mulch.

* Ask the children to wash out their little Yukult and other small containers and put them in the art box for later.

* Model having a wrapper free lunch. Nothing that won't decompose naturally.

* Use puzzles that have missing pieces for art and craft - don't throw them out.

* Donate left over stationary to charity.

* Open windows to let in the breezee instead of habitually using the air con.

* Conduct a waste audit to assess where and what the class is wasting and how it can be reduced, reused or recycled.
